Rhinovirus in Febrile Infants and Risk of Bacterial Infection.

BACKGROUND Febrile infants with viral respiratory infections have a reduced risk of bacterial infection compared with virus-negative infants. The risk of concomitant bacterial infection in febrile infants positive for human rhinovirus (HRV) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is unknown. METHODS Infants 1-90 days old managed using the care process model for well-appearing febrile infants and w...

A polymerase chain reaction-based epidemiologic investigation of the incidence of nonpolio enteroviral infections in febrile and afebrile infants 90 days and younger.

OBJECTIVE Enteroviruses are important pathogens in infants, but their true contribution to febrile illness in infants </=90 days old is unknown. The purpose of this study was to use the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis of enteroviral (EV) infection in febrile and afebrile infants </=90 days of age to improve the understanding of the epidemiology of EV infection in this population. ...

Optimization of PCR-ELISA in Detection of Human Cytomegalovirus Infection

Abstract Background and Objective: Human Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an important cause of congenital viral infection that can lead to serious diseases and complications in infants. Application of rapid, sensitive, and specific HCMV detection methods is necessary for congenital infection detection. We aimed to optimize the use of PCR and ELISA for detection of HCMV in infants. Material and Methods...

Two atypical cases of Kingella kingae invasive infection with concomitant human rhinovirus infection.

We describe two atypical cases of Kingella kingae infection in children diagnosed by PCR, one case involving a soft tissue abscess and one case a femoral Brodie abscess. Both patients had concomitant human rhinovirus infection. K. kingae strains, isolated from an oropharyngeal swab, were characterized by multilocus sequence typing and rtxA sequencing.
